Standard system for removal of H2S out of biogas
DMT has developed the DMT Sulfurex® gas desulphurisation scrubber. The DMT-Sulfurex® desulphurisation process has proven to be cost effective for smaller applications (see references) due to its low capital and running costs, whereas traditional gas desulphurisation systems are not designed for smaller applications and can only be cost effective when used on large or very large gas throughputs.
Characteristics of the DMT Sulfurex® desulphurisation Process:
Low capital cost
- Simple low cost operation and maintenance
- High efficiency on H2S
- Reliable, compact and robust construction
- Low caustic consumption
- Easy implementation of gas drying and conditioning
- Flexible operating parameters
- Equipment assembled as transportable units
- Continuous H2S measurement

Basic Process Description
The biogas flow enters the bottom of the tower and leaves at the top. Water is sprayed from the top and will be in counter current with the gas flow. In the tower an extensive contact between gas and water is created through an installed packed bed in the column. H
2S is absorbed from the gas phase into the water phase and will be binded by the caustic which is dosed in the recirculation water. By continuous H
2S measurement in the biogas outlet and adjusting the caustic dosing pump accordingly, minimum usage of caustic is ensured and maximum security of H
2S concentration in the cleaned biogas is guaranteed. Caustic savings up to 60%can be achieved in comparison with conventional caustis scrubber-technologies.
THe DMT Sulfurex® Double Stage System
DMT also offers the DMT Sulfurex
® Double Stage System. In this installation the gas goes through two scrubber columns. The carbonate (Na
2CO
3) formed in the caustic scrubber is used to bind the first part of the H
2S in a pre-installed carbonate scrubber. In this way even less caustic is needed than in a single scrubber!
Other options are:
- Gas drying and conditioning
- Additional measurements (CH4/CO2)
- Redundancy
- Make-up water unit
