Compact membrane bioreactors for Eastern Europe (24-11-2008)

Decentralised membrane bioreactors (MBRs) make a significant contribution to the treatment of household wastewater in Eastern European countries. Three Dutch firms (DMT Milieutechniek, Norit Membrane Technology and Van der Wiel) are going to install the first compact MBR system in a Rumanian village with a population of 500, located near the Black Sea. The new purification technology, which was developed by Dutchmen, treats the wastewater, producing water of a quality suitable for irrigation. This water is stored in a tank and made available to farmers for a fee. This process gives wastewater economic value.
MBR technology is relatively unknown in Romania. The decentralised, compact and energy-efficient systems offer a solution to the problem posed by the large distances separating the villages. Other Eastern European countries have meanwhile also expressed interest in this Dutch product. However, there is growing interest even in areas of the Netherlands, the wastewater treatment needs of which are largely handled by centralised water treatment plants, which are not connected to a sewage system or where the maximum available water treatment capacity has already been reached.
