The Sustainable Landfill as Supplier of Energy and Water using Various Processes
A modern landfill consist out of a leachate drainage and treatment system together with the collection of biogas. Commonly the biogas is used in a CHP were 60% of the energy is lost to the environment. Old landfills or landfills in developing countries usually even don’t treat the water nor the gas stream or only to minimal extent (aerated lagoon/ flare).
In this paper an integrated solution is shown how a landfill can operate self sustaining with minimal to no waste stream and which even produces energy and clean water. The various process parts will be explained by full scale plants and pilot experiments from DMT worldwide.
