At one of the most advanced Recycled Paper Mills in the UK, at Partington near Manchester, DMT has built a BioSulfurex® installation for the biological desulfurization of biogas.
The biogas from the digester of the waste water plant produces 1120 Nm3/h biogas, which has to be treated before it can be converted to electricity in gas engines and can be used in the RTO. The turbines and RTO allow a maximum hydrogen sulfide concentration of 200 ppm.
DMT designed the actual packed bioreactor with a diameter of 4 meter and total height of 18 meter. Is it not incredible that a bacteria called the Thiobacillus thiooxidans converts the hydrogen sulfide (with a maximum of 10.000 ppm for this project) to sulfuric acid. The bacteria only needs the right conditions and some nutrients to do his duty. The system will be commissioned when the biogas is available later this quarter.
